Curriculum

The following information is provided as a general overview of the many curriculum areas that students should master at each grade level. This list is not meant to be exhaustive, but rather an outline for each subject area.

Additional information can be found in the San Bernardino Diocesan Curriculum Guidelines. The California Frameworks for Public Schools provides further information and guidelines for what is to be accomplished at each grade level.

Second Grade:

Students will:
  • Religion (emphasis on Jesus and God's grace within me through the Sacraments and Mass)
    • Relate learning to real life experiences
    • Know major Church feasts
    • Know signs of sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist, and Reconciliation
    • Know and recite prayers as well as pray spontaneously
  • Family Life
    • Tell how to help build good family relationships
    • Explain the human body is a creation and gift from God
    • Identify how responsibility is part of friendship
    • Participate in learning rules about staying safe
  • Mathematics
    • Be able to read, write, and compare numbers one hundred-nine hundred ninety nine
    • Be able to easily recall addition and subtraction facts and processes to eighteen
    • Be able to recognize and label fractions in halves, thirds, and fourths
    • Be able to estimate and solve one-step daily life problems
    • Be able to use manipulatives, graphs, charts, clocks, calendars, and shapes to solve problems
  • Language Arts
    • Be able to read and understand the meaning of simple works
    • Be able to communicate with sequence of legible and complete sentences
    • Be able to listen to gain information and follow multi-step directions
    • Be able to read and enjoy literature
    • Possess technical writing skills
  • Science
    • Understand how plants grow
    • Understand how weather affects our lives
    • Be able to identify and classify the animals and animal groups
    • Understand the characteristics of various animal and plant habitats
  • Social Studies
    • Understand what makes up a neighborhood
    • Understand how to work, play, and travel in a neighborhood
    • Understanding and appreciating the value and contribution of work
    • Be able to view life from other perspectives and others' point of view as well as explain the effects important inventions, events, people, and moments
  • Music, Art, and Physical Education
    • Music is used throughout the day and well integrated into each subject.
    • Art is integrated daily into all areas of curriculum. They will use the elements and principles of art to create things.
    • Organized Physical Education is scheduled weekly and games are taught for recess play.
