Prayer to St. Peter

O Glorious St. Peter, because of your vibrant and generous faith, sincere humility and flaming love our Lord honored you with singular privileges and especially leadership of the whole Church. Obtain for us the grace of a living faith a sincere loyalty to the Church acceptance of all her teachings, and obedience to all her precepts. Let us thus enjoy an undisturbed peace on earth and everlasting happiness in heaven.

Oración a San Pedro

O Glorioso San Pedro, a causa de su fe viva y generosa, sincera humildad y el amor llama de nuestro Señor le honró con privilegios singulares y especialmente el liderazgo de toda la Iglesia. Nos obtenga la gracia de una fe viva una lealtad sincera a la aceptación Iglesia de todas sus enseñanzas, y la obediencia a todos sus preceptos. Hagamos de este modo disfrutar de una tranquilidad imperturbable en la tierra y la felicidad eterna en el cielo.

St. Peter

Peter, the first pope, was a fisherman from Galilee. Jesus invited Peter to follow him, saying: "I will make you a fisher of men." Peter was a simple, hard-working man. He was generous, honest and loved Jesus very much.

This great apostle's name was Simon, but Jesus changed it to Peter, which means "rock." "You are Peter," Jesus said, "and on this rock I will build my Church." Peter was the chief or prince of the apostles.

When the Roman soldiers arrested Jesus, Peter was afraid. In his fright he committed the sin of denying that he knew Jesus, three times. Peter was terrified that they would kill him too, but before Jesus died, Peter repented totally. He wept over his denials for the rest of his life and Jesus lovingly forgave Peter.

After the resurrection Jesus asked Peter three times: "Do you love me?" "Lord," Peter answered, "you know all things. You know that I love you." Jesus truly did know! Peter was so right. Jesus said kindly: "Feed my lambs. Feed my sheep." He was telling Peter to take care of his Church because he would be ascending into heaven. Jesus left Peter as the leader and head of His Church.

Peter later went to Rome to live. Rome was the center of the whole Roman Empire. Peter converted many nonbelievers there. When the fierce torture of Christians began, they begged Peter to leave Rome and save himself. Peter started out and on the road and Jesus appeared to him. Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "I am coming to be crucified a second time."

Then St. Peter turned around and went back. He understood that this vision meant that he was meant to suffer and die for Jesus. Soon, he was taken prisoner and condemned to death. Because he was not a Roman citizen, he, like Jesus, could be crucified. This time he did not deny the Lord. This time he was ready to die for Jesus. Peter asked to be crucified with his head downward since he was not worthy to suffer as Jesus had. The Roman soldiers did not find this unusual because slaves were crucified upside down.

St. Peter was martyred on Vatican Hill. It was around the year 67. Emperor Constantine built a large church over that sacred location in the fourth century.

San Pedro

Pedro, el primer Papa, era un pescador de Galilea. Jesús invitó a Pedro que lo siguiera, diciendo: "Yo te haré pescador de hombres." Pedro era un hombre sencillo y trabajador. Era generoso, honesto y amaba mucho a Jesús.

El nombre de este gran apóstol era Simón, pero Jesús lo cambió a Pedro, que significa "roca". "Tú eres Pedro", dijo Jesús, "y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia". Pedro fue el jefe o príncipe de los apóstoles.

Cuando los soldados romanos prendieron a Jesús, Pedro tuvo miedo. En el susto que cometió el pecado de negar que conocía a Jesús, tres veces. Peter estaba aterrado de que lo iban a matar también, pero antes de que Jesús murió, Pedro se arrepintió totalmente. Lloró por sus negativas para el resto de su vida con amor y Jesús perdonó a Pedro.

Después de la resurrección de Jesús preguntó tres veces a Pedro: "¿Me amas?" "Señor," Pedro respondió, "que conoce todas las cosas. Ya sabes que Te amo." Jesús realmente sabía! Pedro estaba tan bien. Jesús dijo amablemente: "Apacienta mis corderos Apacienta mis ovejas.". Le estaba diciendo a Pedro para cuidar de su Iglesia porque estaría ascendiendo al cielo. Jesús dejó a Pedro como el líder y jefe de su Iglesia.

Más tarde, Pedro fue a Roma para vivir. Roma era el centro de todo el Imperio Romano. Pedro convirtió a muchos no creyentes allí. Cuando comenzó la feroz tortura de los cristianos, que pidieron a Pedro que Roma y salvarse a sí mismo. Pedro se fue y en el camino y Jesús se le apareció. Pedro le preguntó: "Señor, ¿a dónde vas?" Jesús respondió: "Estoy llegando a ser crucificado por segunda vez."

Entonces San Pedro se dio la vuelta y regresó. Se entiende que esta visión significaba que estaba destinado a sufrir y morir por Jesús. Pronto, fue hecho prisionero y condenado a muerte. Debido a que no era un ciudadano romano, que, como Jesús, podía ser crucificado. Esta vez no se niegan al Señor. Esta vez estaba dispuesto a morir por Jesús. Pedro pidió ser crucificado con la cabeza hacia abajo, ya que no era digno de sufrir como Jesús lo había hecho. Los soldados romanos no encontraron esta inusual porque los esclavos fueron crucificados al revés.

San Pedro fue martirizado en la colina del Vaticano. Fue alrededor del año 67. emperador Constantino construyó una iglesia grande sobre ese lugar sagrado en el siglo IV.
